Vintage Printage started in 2021 when it was discovered that libraries were throwing away collections of magazines. The Smithsonian made their digital archives of magazines available to libraries and universities and our public library systems saw an opportunity to reallocate space for newer technology. Initially we picked up a few tons of magazines and rented storage space to house them to keep them from becoming trash.
Since October 2021 we have offered magazine covers and advertisements for sale to the public at pop up and flea markets throughout Southern California. Along the way we have built relationships with collectors and estate sale agents that have led to regular pickups of magazines that would otherwise be thrown away. We divert magazines from landfills and repurpose 100% of the magazine paper. Anything we do not offer for sale is available to be used by artists or teachers free of charge. We even take the remaining scraps and use them to make new paper.
Vintage Printage provides an additional cultural benefit with a tactile community exploration of art, history, design and culture shared in public settings that bring together people of different generations, socioeconomic backgrounds and lifestyles in the sharing of their experiences with the products and pages from the magazine collection.
